Things to expect during your visit to a dentist in Oak Ridge

Here are a few things patients should do when they come into our clinic:

1. Lots of paperwork

Patients should get to their appointment early so they do not feel rushed while they are there. They should be prepared to fill out paperwork and answer questions about their medical history. Patients will also have to submit information about their insurance provider or other payment arrangements.

2. A routine checkup

The dentist or hygienist will examine the patient. Diagnostic tests like X-rays may be performed in addition to a visual examination. The dentist will then use a scaler to scrape up tartar and plaque deposits from the patient's teeth. They will also floss the patient's teeth.

3. Applicable treatments

Based on the dentist's findings during the routine evaluation, treatments will be performed to fix problems like tooth decay or gum disease. Depending on the severity of the dental issues detected, the procedures might be performed during the same visit or scheduled for future visits.

For example, minor issues like cavities can be treated during the same visit, restoring the patient's teeth before they leave.

4. Preventative treatments

A big part of dentistry is preventing dental issues from developing in the first place. It is why brushing and flossing are highly recommended by dentists since it helps keep teeth healthy. During a routine appointment, the dentist might perform preventative treatments if the patient has an increased risk of dental issues.

For example, if the patient is susceptible to tooth decay, the dentist might perform a fluoride treatment or use dental sealants to give the person an extra layer of protection.

5. Oral cancer screen

Oral cancer can be life-threatening in its later stages, but the rate of successful treatment is exceptionally high when it is detected early. During a routine appointment, the dentist in Oak Ridge will examine the patient's neck, throat and face, looking for any signs of oral cancer. Based on their findings, additional tests might be performed.
